This guy is saying to stop doing conventional squats because the lower back limits how much you can do... That its "not" a sufficient lower body exercise. What do you guys think?

I watched the video, Mike Boyle is a renowned strength coach, so I don't think this can be simply pushed aside as garbage. I'm sure he has logical
reasoning for choosing to promote "Death to the Squat". That being said, I did not learn anything at all from his 5 min video that he said would
explain his point. All I gathered from the video is that he has Freshman level athletes who can single leg squat more than they can parallel free squat. I
would like to see the EMG data, honest 1-10RM data, and biomechanic data of the joint angles. The last of the those I would venture to say plays the largest
role in why he thinks the 1-leg squat elicits larger numbers.

I cant watch the video, and I am certainly not a big squatter, but I think there is a ridiculours amount that can be gained by squatting big. So I will keep
trying.

I think there has been an over emphasis on it as the "King of all exercises" and I think you all remember that poem about the squatter and how if you
want to be strong you better be squatting. I know that most Oly programs got rid of the squat and focus on the front squat. The reasoning was it wasn't
specific enough for what they do and too often the lifters go too heavy and get hurt doing them. I have focused on the front squat and the overhead squat to a
lessor extent the past few off seasons. I think you really need to focus on what you are specifically training for....if you want to be a good strongman, then
train the events, if you want to be a good Highland gamer....train the events etc.
I just always thought that if a guy trained hard enough, he could lift anything he wanted to lift. Wayne Jackson |
