Ok, I guess I'll start with the question. I've been taking a multi, fish oil and zma now for a month and I noticed that I am having major (kinda
violent) mood swings. It has to be the ZMA. I take 3 caps a night before bed on an empty stomach. Should I back off on some of the ZMA or see a shrink? Also, I
was thinking about adding HMB next month to my regimen. Any thoughts?

I have no knowledge on the ZMA, though I have been wondering its benefits. I will tell you that I do like the HMB. Not sure what to tell you on the mood
swings. My wife also struggles with that like one week every month.

What do you all know about ZMA?

From my understanding is that is supposed to help with muscle recovery after workouts, helps maintain or raise testosterone levels, and a sleep aid. I know
that 1 side effect were nightmares but they went away within a week as long as I had my teddy bear. lol

Mark Mitchell swears by it, I have read that it helps for recovery and quality of sleep.

Here is a good one....
What kind of protein should we take? We do not need the high levels of cholesterol like the stuff u can pick up at any store. I hear Isolate is good........ |

Isolate is your purest form, but as long as you are not lactose intollerant you should be fine with any good whey product. I myself use a half whey, half
isolate as I am lactose intollerant.

All proteins are not created equal... that is for sure. Hands down one of the best protein products on the market is the new Platinum Hydro Whey by Optimum
Nutrition! Yes, it is more expensive, but it is of the highest quality because they are taking isolate and hydrolyzing this protein... then they are focusing
the final blend of the protein on specific amino acid profiles for the fractions used.
A lot of the terms used in marketing whey are thrown around without much definition, but here is a simplified reference to terms used with whey (milk protein). There are more robust definitions, but I think this is just straight forward... - Concentrate - protein @ 70-80%; lactose/fat (some of the lactose and fat are remove... thus the protein is concentrated) - Isolates - greater protein percentage 90% (more concentrated) - Ion Exchange - method of isolating; often lose peptide fractions - Micro Filtered - it is also a means of isolating - Hydrolyzed - broken down to peptides (easier to digest/absorb) - Fractions - selecting for specific biological function or amino acid profile of a peptide It is all milk protein (whey). But, it is processed differently to improve the absorption and/or the amino acid profile.

Very good recommendations ET for the joint health.
Another point/answer to Sal's protein question. It also depends on when you are taking the protein. Most of the time during the day and especially after a workout, you want whey/isolate, etc.. At night before going to sleep, you want casein, as it is slower releasing.

i may be wrong ...but, one thing i do with whey potien at night is to take my fish and flax seed oil with it - my thought process is that the oils will slow
down the release of the whey protien -- not a big fan of the cost or taste of a casein protien

Not sure about that Tim as I take my fish and flax oil along with the casein at night. I take ON's chocolate casein which tastes pretty good and isn't
much more than their whey. Also, it mixes a little thicker which I prefer. I don't like that watery texture.
I know you can buy cheaper protein, but I am pretty happy with ON's products. I have used them for years.

Tim -
You are correct. If you don't like casein, adding healthy oils to whey protein is a way to delay gastric emptying and create a "slow(er) release" protein. Although you can do the same thing with casein and have the benefit of both, some people just don't like casein in powder form or in foods (cottage cheese).

dj...check your price per pound- most of the casien (ok - i only bought one jug of it - and it has been a few years) i've bought was sold in a smaller size
3.3 lbs. ( i think was the ON Casien i bought) for about the same cost of 5 or 6 lbs. of ON whey...things may have changes since i last looked into it-- i
didn't like the consistancey of it--looking forward to trying the new ON whey that shawn spoke of earlier!

Shawn,
Do you have any experience with the LBA's, I think it stand for Liquid Beef aminos, I have seen a few companys recently touting this as a great source of protein, wondered if you have a opinion on it. Im going to order some of the ON's new whey hydro also, I heard the amount/serving size needed is smaller than reg whey. ST

Tim,
I get mine at DPS Nutrition. The whey and casein are both 39.99, the whey is for 5# and the casein is for 4#. So it is a little more but 4# lasts quite awhile considering I only take it at night.

I got mine last night. read up a little on it this morning. Im not a scientist, but it made sense. It said that the protein is in smaller peices, thus making
it more easily absorbed. It also contains a digestive enzyme improving the rate of absorption as well as BCAAs which I have been wanting to try. It sounds like
good stuff. I will let you guys know what I think after I have tried it.
